In this CBC video it tells a little about what about native kids who were force to go to churches to cleanse themselves from being native. They were force into the mainstream of talking English and stop being there aboriginal culture. The government believes that forcing kids to learn English and Christianity is easier than forcing adults to do. They were forbidden to speak their own language and when they try to they were abuse. Most of natives aspects were suppress in the child. Kids were abuse or sexually abuse in the church when they try to talk in their native language or try anything in their native culture.
It was mandatory to come to school and agents were there to employ that all native kids attend. There were about 1100 students attending 69 residual schools. There were about 150 000 natives, Inuit, and metis children were removed from their homes and into boarding schools (residual school). At some schools each of their days started with 30min religious service and ended with prayer. On Sundays there would walk to the local perish church, sing for the choir, and then a hour of moral instruction from there school principle.
The schools were establishing with the thought that aboriginal culture was unable or to slow to adapt to Canadian society. Canadians believe that native children could successfully assimilate in the Canadian society if they learn English or French and were Christian. They were away from their family for 10 months of the year; they lived in substandard conditions and rarely had opportunities to see a normal family life. If the students at the school had a brother or sister, they wouldn’t be able to see each other at all at school since all activities were segregated to gender. When kids sent letters of correspondence to their parents, it would be in English so most of the parents were unable to read it.
When the students return to the reserve, most of the kids found out that they don’t belong anymore in there reserve. Since most of the skills they had before going to residential school were forgotten, they weren’t able to help their parents in doing chores and were ashamed of themselves. The new skills they learn from school made it hard to function in urban settings. The aims of assimilation meant devastation for those subjected to years of abuse.
The church leaders tried to defend the schools by saying they had good intention of doing it, some natives accepted what the church leader said. An example of this is Dr. Enos Montour, a former residential school student saying that they kept him alive after starving for 4 years.
Idiocracy
I believe that this movie is a type of satire because of how they ridicule how society is today. This movie makes fun of how we are in this generation and how our world looks and what it would look years later. The sarcasm they use in the movie are what people today would use or already use.
In the movie Idiocracy, the movie ridicules on how people of today generation would sit around and do nothing. They were on point with some of the joke for example on how Rito all he would do is sit on his toilet chair and watch TV. Another way they are ridiculing today is what they put on TV. An example of this would be the reality TV show “Owww! My Balls!!” where the main character always gets sacked and Rito and bunch of other people would laugh at his pain. They ridicule on how the TV. shows we play today are immature and people would laugh at other people’s pain.
This movie also ridicules on the way people eat. Most people now a day’s don’t usually eat healthy food and would eat fast food more than making their own food. In the movie nobody eats healthy food and everyone would only eat fast food or junk food. Another is the drinks they have. Instead of having water in the water fountain they have a Gatorade-like drink called Brawndo “The Thirst Mutilator”. They use this drink for everything instead of water and people thought it was better for them; they would use Brawndo to water plants instead of water since the advertisement told them that the drink itself has “electrolytes that plants love”.
Idiocracy has a bunch of things that relate to society today such as some of the TV/movies that play today to the TV/movie that play in the movie. Another example would be the movie “Ass” which is about a butt. This is one of the top movies in theatre in the movie but has no plot to it at all. This relates to some the shows or movie playing today such as the movie “Jackass” which is all about people doing dumb things to get money. One of the things that most people laugh at today and including in the movie is the use of foul language. People in the movie use foul words in every sentence and acting as its in their normal vocab. Example of this is when they call people who talk normal “Fags” and start laughing at them for talking normally.
The commercialism in the movie is almost exactly how it is here. They are all over the places and advertised on every television. Since most people just sit and watch today they obviously people a bunch of advertisements so people can watch and hoping to buy their supplies. One character shows just how rampant commercialism is in later years when after every sentence he would add “Brought to you by Carl’s JR” hoping he would get paid just for saying that. Famous people now a day’s sell their bodies to make money to advertise other people product/company.
These are all the reasons as to why I believe the movie “Idiocracy” is a Satire. This movie makes good humour on our generation and why we should change what we do now.
The Age of Stupid

The movie start in 2055 when the climate change affected the world so much that it flooded London and burn Sydney. There’s one man that finds an archive of videos from the 20th century and starts watching them. He watches videos of 2 Iraqi kids who moved to Jordan during the Iraq war. He watched another one about a Nigerian woman who wants to study about medicine but struggles with the poverty of her country, and watched more videos about other countries and people who were affected by climate change.
The work that the creator was trying tell us is that if we don’t change anything, we are going to destroy our world. In the beginning of the movie, he shows video of the past of how we humans destroyed our own planet that we live on. Countries attack other countries to get supplies for their countries not worry what would happen to the environment or the people in the country. One example would be people in Nigeria where another country destroyed their home and place an oil factory to get oil from them.
The creator is trying to make us feel bad and worry about our future. That if we don’t do something to change our ways our world is going to be a goner. Trying to make us feel sad also for our future and the for other peoples future. I think the creator did a good job in making me feel this way. The way they show the clips really help in thinking about change.
A scene in this movie that was memorable was the 2 kids who were from Iraq and had to move because of the war happening in their country. Another one would be the people in Nigeria on how they had their place burned down and lost something important to them. An effect in this movie I find memorable was the futuristic effect, how he drag the clips and put it in a timeline for someone to watch. Lastly the effect in the end was very memorable; it got me thinking on how our world could be something like that.
I love how this movie helps change my way of the world and how I should change my ways to help keep our earth. I agree that we are responsible for this and that we should change it before it’s too late. My favourite scene in this movie was the ending since it should that we should change and keep our environment cause this our only environment we have.
